Candles- A lighting guide since the medieval age

Candles have always been a source of light since wax was introduced. It has its own significance for different religion. According to Christianity, a lighting candle is a representation of the Almighty who consumed Himself to give light to those who lost the rightful direction in their life and also to protect them from committing sins.

Altar candles are kept on the high altar in the church or they are kept near the altar. These are burnt in mass celebrations or any other type of celebration in the church.

Another type of Candles is Christmas Candles. According to the traditional Advent Calendar, December month (four weeks prior to Christmas) is marked with the celebrations in lieu of Jesus’s arrival in this mortal world. This set of candle comprises of four candles- 3 purple (or blue colored) and 1 pink colored candle.

A purple (or blue) candle is lit on the First Sunday of Advent. This signifies Hope because this week gives stimulating and elevating hope that Christ represents among us.

On the following Sunday, another purple or blue candle is lit. This is practiced to rejoice Peace that the Prince of Peace himself bought along with the promise of peace that He got for the Earth.

On the Third Sunday, a pink tinged candle is burnt to celebrate Joy. It is that joy that the shepherds had received when they came to know about Christ's birth. This also signifies the joy that God brings in our lives when He came to help us.

Finally, as Christ’s birth comes closer, the final purple candle is lit on the last Sunday of Advent. This is done in order to celebrate Love. It is God's boundless love for His children and His children’s love for other beings. Altar candles are in a way different from Christmas candles as they are not theme colored but can be lit in any shape or size.

According to the Christians, Jesus is also known as “The Light of the World”, thus, the bright light that emits from the candles indicates the ever growing hope of the birth of Jesus Christ.
